O'Melveny's 2018-2019 Pro Bono Review
O’MELVENY PRO BONO PROGRAM REVIEW 2018- 2019 37 Global Day of Service On September 27, 2018, more than 60 O’Melveny attorneys and staff members across the country volunteered their time in a Global Day of Service, an initiative spearheaded by Ford Motor Company’s Legal Alliance for Women. O’Melveny welcomed more than 20 undocumented “Dreamers” and their families to the firm’s San Francisco office. O’Melveny, in combination with other law firms, assisted the Dreamers in completing renewal applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and covered all associated fees. Volunteers also assembled bicycles and distributed them to the Dreamers’ children and young siblings. Meanwhile, in New York City, O’Melveny participated in a legal clinic for entrepreneurs in partnership with the City Bar Justice Center’s Neighborhood Entrepreneur Law Project. Client Collaborations O’Melveny frequently collaborates with valued corporate clients on pro bono projects and initiatives to better serve the community. Together, the firm and its commercial clients are well-positioned to expand access to justice. O’Melveny and Chubb Aid Transgender Clients Seeking Legal Name Changes O’Melveny collaborated with Chubb and the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) to host a pro bono clinic focused on assisting transgender people with changing their legal names. For many transgender people, securing a legal name change is an important step toward making their legal identities match their lived experience. A lack of appropriate identity documents can deter people from applying for jobs, school, and public benefits, and can lead to discrimination. O’Melveny and Chubb were able to help 18 people who, without representation, may not have been able to achieve this milestone in their transition. O’Melveny received the Allegiance Award from longtime pro bono collaborator Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), which is dedicated to protecting unaccompanied children caught up in the immigration system. Dreams Within Reach. Budding entrepreneurs sat down with volunteer attorneys from O’Melveny, Chubb, and the City Bar Justice Center at a clinic in New York City.
